Duty to God Award: Introduction
The Saints In Scouting Duty to God Award is the religious award for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their friends who are currently registered in Scouting and are 11 years of age or older, including adults registered with Scouting America or a Scouting organization approved by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM).
To earn this award, Scouts should first discuss the requirements for the Duty to God Award with a parent, a local Church leader, or a Scout leader. Scouters have the additional option to discuss requirements with a spouse. Before beginning work on the award, you should also obtain a journal (either a hard copy or a journaling app) to record your thoughts.
To help you understand the importance of keeping a journal, you can review a video from President Henry B. Eyring’s talk in the October 2007 General Conference entitled “O Remember, Remember.” Once you have procured either a journal or have a journaling app and have reviewed the excerpt of President Eyring’s talk, you can then begin working on the requirements and electives for this award.
Do not be in too much of a hurry to earn or “run through” the award. This award is designed to help strengthen your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and increase your understanding of the importance of doing your duty to God. As you work on and complete certain requirements, write your feelings in your journal or discuss with a parent, spouse, or Scouting leader as required. As you complete each requirement, note in the table on the Duty To God Application the number of the requirement or elective and the date it was completed. Then have it initialed by a parent, spouse, or Scouting leader.
Once you have completed all requirements for the Duty to God Award, speak with the appropriate adult about what you have learned and have them sign at the bottom of the requirements form. Contact your Scout leader, who will discuss with you what you have learned and, after interviewing you and signing the Application Form, will submit your application through an online form and place an order for your Award (see SaintsInScouting.org/religious-awards). Once your Scout leader has received your Duty To God medallion and certificate from Saints In Scouting, your award should then be presented at a future Scouting event or court of honor.
