The “Be A Light” Award

If you’re heading to the 2026 National Scout Jamboree – there’s something we want you to do while you’re there.

Stop by the Saints In Scouting booth in the Duty to God & Country area.

And earn the Be A Light Award. Here’s everything you need to know:

Who can earn it: Any Jamboree participant. Youth or adult. Latter-day Saint or not. The Be A Light Award is open to everyone attending the 2026 Jamboree – because the light of Jesus Christ belongs to everyone, and the Saints In Scouting team at the booth is ready to help any Scout or Scouter complete it.

How long it takes: About 25-30 minutes.

What you’ll do: 6 requirements – each one meaningful, none of them busy work.

You’ll talk with a leader, chaplain, or Saints In Scouting staff about what it means to have faith and why duty to God is part of the Scout Oath.

You’ll read a section of For the Strength of Youth called “Walk in God’s Light” and discuss how you can be a light that helps others take their next step forward. You’ll begin your personal history in a journal – writing down at least 2 experiences from the Jamboree and what you’ve learned from them.

You’ll learn about the beliefs and practices of a religion other than your own – because at a Jamboree with thousands of Scouts from across the country, that opportunity is literally everywhere you look.

You’ll read “The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles,” the declaration of the Church’s leadership about Jesus Christ, and discuss its doctrines with someone at our exhibit.

And you’ll teach another Scout the importance of service – and then go do some together, right there at the Jamboree.

That’s it. Six things. About half an hour. A medallion you’ll keep for the rest of your life.

The award takes its name from two passages of scripture that frame everything Saints In Scouting stands for.

John 1:5 calls Jesus Christ the light that “shineth in darkness.” And in 3 Nephi 18:24, He turns to His disciples and says: “Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up – that which ye have seen me do.”

President Nelson said it simply: “The world needs the light of Jesus Christ. And it needs your light.”

The Saints In Scouting exhibit is in the Duty to God & Country area of the Jamboree. Come find us. Bring your Scout. Bring your whole patrol. The staff will be there to walk every single person through the requirements and help them earn it.

But what it represents is better. Come be a light.
